Climate

The climate is moderate with no excessive heat, cold or humidity. From July to August the daytime temperature range is 18 to 28 °C (65° - 82° F) and from January to February the range is -2 to 7 °C (28° - 45° F). In spring and autumn, the daytime temperature range is 8 to 15 °C (46° - 59° F).

Transportations

Major international airports are in Zurich, Geneva and Basel, with smaller airports in Lugano and Berne. Flying into nearby Milan (Italy), Lyon or even Paris (France), Frankfurt (Germany), or Munich (Germany) are other options though rather expensive and time-consuming. Some discount airlines fly to Friedrichshafen, Germany which is just across Lake Constance (the Bodensee) from Romanshorn, not too far (1h) from Zurich. Trains arrive from all parts of Europe. Switzerland is together with Germany one of the most central-lying countries in Europe, making it a nexus of railways and highways to the rest of Europe.

Travel Tips

Be prepared to encounter citizens that speak different languages depending on what city you’re visiting. Switzerland has four national languages with three of them heavily spoken in various regions of the country. German is predominantly spoken in the north, centre and eastern regions of Switzerland, with French (west) and Italian (south) making up the rest of the countries language regions.

Make sure to download the SBB app for your phone as you’ll have everything at your fingertips from train schedules, trip planning and mobile tickets for boarding. If you’re looking for public transportation in Swiss cities, simply fire up the Google Maps apps on your mobile phone.

While the Euro is accepted in Switzerland, we highly recommend you exchange some currency for Francs as almost everywhere you go will prefer the local currency. Debit and Credit machines will also give you the opportunity to pay in your local currency and a very fair rate if you prefer to pay by card.

For those of you who are 25 and under, you can still purchase youth train passes and save even more money compared to the normal adult rate.

Do ask for your tax-free shopping cheque and reclaim VAT if your purchase exceeds CHF 500.
